21st Century Growth at Children’s Habilitation Center (CHC)
How a moment of transition became the foundation for decades of growth, innovation, and unmatched pediatric care.
In 2007, CHC faced an unexpected turning point. David Markle, who had led the organization as Executive Director for 35 years, passed away — followed just six months later by Dr. Zollar, who had served as Medical Director throughout that same era. Their combined decades of dedication had shaped CHC into what it was, and their loss was deeply felt.
Rather than allow that legacy to falter, Pam Markle — David’s daughter — stepped forward to accept the role of CEO, committed to carrying CHC’s mission into a new chapter. CHC continued to grow as the only true long-term pediatric care facility in Illinois, licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health for 67 beds and guided by three enduring values: compassion, innovation, and holistic care.
As the complexity of care evolved, so did CHC’s team. The organization expanded its clinical staff to include Respiratory Therapists, Trach Wound Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Physical Therapists, Certified Occupational Therapist Assistants, a Registered Dietitian, and a Psychologist — ensuring every child receives comprehensive, coordinated support.
Education has also been central to CHC’s approach from the beginning. With Doris Zollar playing a foundational role in its development, CHC’s onsite educational program is certified by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and accredited by the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET). Even the youngest residents — children under the age of three — participate in structured early childhood development programming.
CHC was recognized as the “2023 Long Term Care Facility of the Year” by the Illinois Health Care Association (IHCA), a testament to the entire team’s unwavering commitment to excellence.
In 2024, following more than 16 years of dedicated leadership, Pamela Markle retired from CHC. Continuing the company’s legacy, third-generation leader Ted Schaetzle assumed the role of CEO, leading CHC into its next chapter of modern growth and innovation.
Today, CHC stands as the largest member of the national Pediatric Complex Care Association (PCCA) in the United States providing ventilator care, setting the standard for quality, cost-effectiveness, and holistic treatment of children with complex medical needs.
